May brings warmer weather, longer days, and the long-awaited feeling that summer is finally within reach. But for many Woods students, it also brings the quiet dread of upcoming AP exams. As testing dates approach, stress levels are on the rise. But to help ease those nerves, a couple of AP teachers shared their best last-minute tips and encouragement for students looking to walk into the testing room feeling confident.
One of the most consistent pieces of advice from teachers is simply to prioritize rest over cramming.
“I think the best thing students can do right before testing is just make sure they get a good night’s sleep” shared Mrs. Lawrence. “Sleep in a little bit.”
Another common suggestion is to remember that success on the exam comes from the work done throughout the year. Dr. Hawkins urges students to “focus on all the hard work and preparation you’ve done and know that you’re ready.” Mrs. Lawrence echoed that statement, recommending that students “remember that all the work you did all year long is what got you ready for the test, so you try to resist the urge to cram at the last minute.”
When it comes to the exam itself, Mrs. Lawrence reminded students that “there’s so much partial credit on the free response sections,” and writing something will never harm your score. Students often underestimate this, but on an AP exam, partial credit adds up.
AP season is stressful, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Make sure to rest and trust your preparation. The good news, as Mrs. Lawrence put it, is simple: “It’s gonna be over soon.”
