Enrichment programs give students a chance to explore new interests, and for senior Akshar Patel, it was an opportunity to share something he loves. What began as a personal interest in photo editing has grown into an enrichment that gives students a creative outlet and a chance to learn new skills.
With a photography enrichment already being offered by Dr. Sikes, Akshar saw an opportunity to create something new. Drawing on his experience in photo editing, he developed a program centered on something he already knew and enjoyed. “I was really into photo editing,” he explained, and wished to share that interest with other students.
When asked what makes running the enrichment worthwhile, his answer was immediate: “It’s something that I’m passionate about, that I actually know a lot about, that I care about, and I can just teach it to other people.” The enrichment is a way for students to discover skills they might not have explored otherwise. For some students, it was their first real exposure to photo and video editing. Alongside this, leading the enrichment is a refreshing break from the regular school day, and a space where Akshar has the chance to share his interests with others.
But even leading the enrichment has become a learning experience for him. “I’ve learned specifically not to assume people know things in a field that you’re really skilled in,” he reflected. “A lot of times, especially when I first started out, I was very jumbled in my explanation.” Teaching something you’re passionate about requires more than just being good at it; you have to meet people where they are and plan your lessons thoughtfully, paying special attention to your audience. “It really depends on if people are willing to learn,” he added, reflecting on the different groups of students he has worked with.
When asked if he would encourage other students to start their own enrichment, Akshar’s answer was quick, but came with a caveat.
“If you have something you really like and people who want to join, then I would recommend doing it,” he said. But, he emphasized that genuine passion plus a group of students who you know share that passion is key.
For Akshar, the enrichment is about more than just editing photos. It’s a place where students can experiment outside of the regular rules of a classroom. At the same time, running the program has taught him how to explain and work with others, making the enrichment a learning experience for everyone involved.
